Like every good executive, each has faced moments in their career when outside help was required — sometimes to provide missing expertise, sometimes to strengthen waning focus, more often, to provide or augment insufficient “arms and legs” — to just get work done.
Those service needs varied. Sometimes, the challenge was related to improving efficiency, managing risk, or leveraging capital — and each time, a slew of consultants surfaced eager and able to help.
But other times, the challenge was related to driving growth — making sales and revenue grow faster, and more profitably. Each of those times, finding help proved much more difficult. Strategy firms could help with strategy — if they’d return the call — and if we could afford them? Marketing communications firms and agencies circled hungrily — but somehow, their answer was always, and predictably, more advertising, new websites, and better brochures. There were the “rent-a-BD-guy” firms and lead gen callers, but those options always seemed to lead to more money, and more disappointment. And the technology firms promised help by implementing CRM, SFA, and other systems and technology — all seemingly devoid of any real understanding of the process or people issues involved in growing a business with selling as a real competency.
Nobody, it seemed, could help solve the growth problem in its entirety in mid-sized, mid-life companies like ours.
